Every hairstylist remember fondly the moment they became fascinated with hair and also the passion for creativity who’s inspires. The story was not different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her desire for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. A symptom: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted with the ages of 19. Her first duty station was in Okinawa, Japan, accompanied by an industry operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s time in Korea, a barber would check out the site and provide haircuts towards the Marines. But then, this happened: “I what food was in a tent doing my own, personal hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would certainly do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, once i had a Marine Sergeant come up to me and ask me to get a haircut. I had never cut anybody’s hair before however i jumped directly into it and that he finished up loving it…and with his outreach and leadership, literally the very next day, I had created 13 Marines aligned for me personally.”
This can be the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering being a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut understanding that maybe it was. Having a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair during the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads each time you service a customer, there’s impact.
The effect of the Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are near an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything must be flush, measured properly-there’s a lot of care about detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was taking a look at Marines from head to feet. It tore up my heart because we’re the finest people of this nation and that we need to be walking around consequently. That’s the place that the impact i believe and heart originated, i seriously considered able to transmit that through my hands to those around me…and ask them to walk around feeling proud and good from head to feet, and representing this nation consequently.”

After getting back from service, Kristyl asked herself just what the next challenge and chapter in her life could be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education like a barber at Bellus Academy.
