Every hairstylist remember fondly the moment they became attracted to hair along with the desire for creativity which it inspires. The story was no different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an experienced beauty education. In their story, there’s a valuable message which can be shared. “It doesn’t matter where you begin or the way you begin. I would like to be able to spark that passion into people where we’re thus, making this industry much better, we’re learning from our history and we’re carrying on that legacy,” shared Kristyl. This is her story.
The start: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted at the chronilogical age of 19. Her first duty station was at Okinawa, Japan, followed by an area operation in Korea. Weekly during Kristyl’s period in Korea, a barber would look at the site and provide haircuts for the Marines. But, this happened: “I was in a tent doing my very own hair,” shares Kristyl. “I definitely do shape ups and line ups personally, nothing too crazy, when I were built with a Marine Sergeant come up to me and have me for the haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before however jumped directly into it and he ended up loving it…and regarding his outreach and leadership, literally the following day, I had created 13 Marines lined up for me personally.”
This can be the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering as a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut and that was it. Having a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair throughout the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and each time you service a client, there’s impact.
The effect of your Haircut
“As a Marine, the factors for appearance are at an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything has to be flush, measured properly-there’s a lot of care about detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was looking at Marines from head to toe. It tore up my heart because we’re the best people with this nation and we need to be walking around consequently. That’s the location where the impact i believe and heart originated from, and i also thought about being able to transmit that through my hands to individuals around me…and keep these things walk around feeling proud and good from head to feet, and representing this nation as such.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After returning from service, Kristyl asked herself what are the next challenge and chapter in their life would be. That’s when she decided to pursue her education as a barber at Bellus Academy. Learning from her own background and excited, she found many similarities in their service and becoming a barber.
